Leon County Schools – Bus Maintenance Facility

As part of their long term plan to convert their school bus fleet to compressed natural gas (CNG), the Leon County School District constructed a new 55,000 SF PEMB with 22 maintenance bays, 2 express bays, and 1 steam cleaning bay. A small 7,428 SF addition provides toilets, lockers, and offices, and an existing 5,167 SF concrete building was renovated for use for parts storage, offices, and training rooms. An extensive sitework project consisted of removal of approximately 12,000 cubic yards of unsuitable soils, underground utilities, site lighting, concrete curb & gutter, sidewalks, asphalt paving and landscaping/ irrigation. The project also included more than 500 feet of cast-in-place concrete retaining walls for the new stormwater management facility. Retaining walls averaged nine feet tall and were eight inches thick. A private CNG contractor, Nopetro, constructed and operates a free-standing CNG station, also designed by DAG, which is available for use by other Tallahassee-based businesses who have converted their vehicles to this clean power source. Work on this project was completed in four phases over several years.
